Chapter 6 – The Treasure
This part of the harbor was not so busy, there was almost no one over there. They could see a huge ship. On the side of the ship, the word ‘Atlantic’ was inscribed in big bold letters. Luckily, the ship was connected to the coast and they could easily enter the ship.
“Ok, so here we go now, I hope we will find the treasure otherwise all our time and energy would be for nothing”, said Mr. Cameron. They entered the ship. It looked exactly like how the old ships looked like. It was fully dusty and the mast of the ship was very huge. They could see a few boxes here and there and concluded that the ship was used for trading goods. Cathy took out the flashlights and gave it to the others. They all dispersed and started looking for any place where the treasure could possibly be hidden.
George started to walk towards the edge of the ship and suddenly tripped and fell. He looked down to the floor and found a handle. He called the others to come and check it out. There was a flight of stairs leading downstairs.
“Hmm, this is actually creepy, but the treasure could be there”, said Harry. “What if there are spiders down there? I don’t want to go there if there are any spiders”, said Natalie.
“We need to find that treasure… so come on let’s go fast”, said Mr Cameron. They went down one by one and when they reached the lower compartment. They found……nothing!
There was not even a single object over there. Everyone was disappointed but George yet didn’t lose hope. “Wow, we came here for this! Come on let’s go, we couldn’t find any treasure.”, said Nathane. He was very sad that they couldn’t find anything.
“No, don’t lose hopes, let’s keep on searching, we might find something.”, said George. “Yes, you are right, we will continue our search, we might find something”, said Mr Cameron. Everyone continued their search for the treasure.
George noticed that Saffi was barking loudly against one particular wall. George quickly went towards the wall and started running his fingers against the wall, hoping that he will find something. The wall was surely dusty but he didn’t care about it, he wanted to find the treasure. Then suddenly, he felt something on the wall.
He flashed his light to the point and found a small round switch. George pressed on it and suddenly a part of the wall on the opposite side opened wide.
George shouted, “Hey everyone, See what I found here!” They all ran towards the wall, it was dark and they could not see anything. They flashed their lights inside and they had found it! The treasure was right in front of them. They were huge boxes filled with gold, jewelry and precious stones and many more expensive and antique things.
“Wahoo! We have found it. We have found the treasure of the entire town”. Everyone was so happy that they almost jumped up and down with excitement. Mr. Cameron quickly called the police to come and check it out. They were never more delighted as they were now. The police came soon and checked everything out. Soon the five friends and Mr. Cameron became popular and the entire town knew about the quest of finding the mysterious treasure. This quest was known to each and every child of the town. The next day’s newspaper was filled entirely about the treasure hunt. The six of them were rewarded by the Mayor of the town. Their families were prouder of them than ever.
“Wow! George and Cathy, you both are really good young detectives”, said Grandpa the minute he heard of the treasure hunt. The days went by fast and George, Cathy, Nathane, Natalie and Harry had become the best friends for life. They decided to remain in touch even after the summer holidays. The more interesting fact was that the five of them had got a small share of the treasure too.
Mr. Cameron got the treasure he was meant to get, and the rest went to the town. George and Cathy were really sad that they had to now say goodbye to Crail. On their way back home, George and Cathy were describing their entire summer vacation to their parents. “Wow, George and Cathy, I didn’t know that you both could even find treasure. Really, George, adventure follows wherever you go. You know, even your grandpa was really good in cracking mysteries, he always used to tell me his stories”, said Dad. That’s when something clicked in George’s mind, the painting between the two rooms of Grandpa’s house was that of the sea, the harbor and the Atlantic ship! George wondered, “Did Grandpa know about this treasure when he made that painting?
